Breast lift is one of the popular cosmetic surgery procedures for women who want to restore firmer, perkier, and youthful looking breasts. The breast lift procedure may vary slightly in each case, but for the most part, the procedural steps will remain the same. The procedure can take about one to four hours, depending on the extent of surgery to be performed.

Anesthesia
Breast lift cosmetic surgery may be performed using local anesthesia with IV sedation or inhaled anesthesia. The surgeon will choose the most appropriate option in consultation with the patient at the time of pre-op consultation. In either case, the patient will be completely asleep during the procedure. When the effect of anesthesia is over, the patient will be unaware of what occurred during the surgery.
Placing the Incisions
Following anesthesia, the next step will be creation of incisions. The surgeon will carefully place the incisions according to the pre-determined surgical plan. Incisions will be in accordance to the breast lift technique chosen for the surgery, but these will be placed in discreet locations to minimize visible scarring. Natural folds of the breasts will mostly conceal the scarring after a breast lift.
Lifting the Breasts
The surgeon will trim away excess tissue through the incisions and reshape the underlying breast tissue to create proportionate, natural looking breasts. If the areola is enlarged, the surgeon will reshape this area and remove excess tissue from the circumference. The nipple and areola can be moved to a higher position to match with the lifted breasts.
After the lifting and reshaping of breasts is completed, the surgeon will re-drape the skin, bringing some of the tissue that was above the areolas down to the lower part of the breasts. Closing the Incisions
To retain the new shape of the breasts and to keep the skin in place, the surgeon will place multiple sutures, which will extend into the deeper breast tissue. Many surgeons use traditional sutures, which will be removed in about a week to 10 days after the procedure. If dissolvable sutures are used, they will be easily absorbed by the body and will not have to be removed.
Compression Garment and Bandages
Following the surgery, the surgeon will wrap the incision areas in bandages. The patient will also be required to wear a compression garment or surgical bra. These will support healing and help to maintain the new shape of breasts. Discomfort is minimized with these garments, and they will prevent the incisions from opening up.
Drains will be placed beneath the skin to collect excess fluid and minimize the risk of infection. In many cases, the drainage tubes and sutures are removed around the same time.
