What is Breast Reconstruction Plastic Surgery?

Breast Reconstruction Plastic Surgery

What is Breast Reconstruction Plastic Surgery?Women who may have one or both breasts removed as part of mastectomy usually have the option to restore their breast appearance with breast reconstruction.

This cosmetic surgery procedure can help to boost the patient’s personal confidence and her sense of femininity. But breast reconstruction is a major surgery, which should only be performed by an experienced surgeon.

At the time of initial consultation, the surgeon will determine the patient’s candidacy and recommend the most appropriate breast reconstruction technique.

They will address any concerns that the patient may have so that she can make a well-informed and wise decision. Perceptive, fabulous, and board certified female plastic surgeon Dr. Farah Naz Khan provides breast reconstruction to patients in Dallas, Texas and other cities and communities in this area of the state.

Candidacy

An ideal candidate for breast reconstruction would usually have the following attributes:

  • Wishes to restore her natural-looking breast appearance after a mastectomy
  • Is free of cancerous tissue
  • Is ready to stop smoking for a specified period and follow the surgeon’s pre- and post-surgical instructions
  • Has coped well with previous cancer treatment
  • Is willing to commit the time needed for multiple procedures
  • Has a positive mindset and realistic expectations from breast reconstruction

The surgeon will educate the patient about the benefits and limitations of breast reconstruction cosmetic surgery and explain the steps involved in it so that the patient can prepare accordingly for her procedure.

Procedure

A patient may receive breast reconstruction simultaneously with mastectomy or wait until the breast removal is done and healing is completed. Flap technique or breast implants are two main techniques to perform breast reconstruction. In the implant technique, the surgeon will insert silicone or saline breast implants below the chest muscle.

In case of flap reconstruction, the breast will be reconstructed using surplus skin, fat and muscle from other sites in the patient’s body to reconstruct the breasts. The surgeon will help the patient select the right technique as per her specific needs.

Implant-based Reconstruction

Implant-based reconstruction will involve a few stages. At first, the surgeon will place a balloon expander under the skin and chest muscle to create expansion. It may take a few weeks or months for the area to become stretched enough to create space for the placement of breast implant. Thereafter, the reconstruction will be performed using silicone or saline implant of an appropriate size and shape.

Flap Reconstruction

This procedure will begin with the removal of surplus tissue from donor sites such as the abdomen, back, or buttocks, which will be purified and transferred to the chest area. The new tissue will create the breast mound. In some cases, an implant may also be placed at the same time.

The flap technique requires additional incisions, which will create a little more scarring and require a longer time to heal. However, the results with the flap technique may be more natural looking and sustainable than the implant based technique.
