What happens during a Chemical Peel Treatment?

Before undergoing a chemical peel, some patients need to follow a pre-peel skin care plan for two to four weeks. This plan can improve the results and minimize possible side effects. The dermatologist will inform the patient whether this is necessary. 

Initially, the patient will be prepped for the treatment on the day of their peel. This includes cleansing the skin thoroughly. If they receive a deep peel, they will undergo general anesthesia and will remain unconscious during the procedure. A deep chemical peel must be performed in a surgical setting. 

Once the patient is prepped, the treatment provider will apply the peel quickly and evenly. They will closely monitor the patient’s skin to remove the peel at the right time. In case of a deep peel, the skin is addressed one small section at a time, as doing so limits the impact on the heart and lungs.

After the peel comes off, the skin will receive treatment as required. Patients who receive a medium peel may need cool compresses followed by a lotion or cream to soothe their skin. When undergoing a deep peel, the patients will have a wound that requires a surgical dressing.

Is there downtime associated with chemical peels?

The patient will have downtime following a medium or deep peel med spa treatment. In the case of a deep chemical peel, the patient will need two to three weeks of recuperation at home. 

When will I see the results?

Once the skin heals, the patient will be able to see the results. The healing time for chemical peels ranges from one day for lunchtime or rejuvenating peel to 14 days or longer for a deep peel. The patient may need three to five lunchtime or rejuvenating peels to achieve the results that they seek. 

How long will the results last?

Most results are not permanent as the skin ages in an ongoing manner. If a person has significant skin damage or precancerous growths called AKs, they will likely continue to see new spots and growths on their skin. 

What are the potential side effects?
